How we rank
Five scores, one grade, and a plain explanation of what each one means.
Every product on a comparison page receives five scores out of ten. The overall grade is their average, shown as a number and as a letter. The same five scores are used for every product category.
The five scores
Performance
Whether the product does what it is bought for, according to the maker's published specifications and what buyers report after real use.
Build and safety
Materials, construction and the safety features the maker lists, plus buyer reports of faults, breakage or wear over time.
Ease of use
How easy the product is to set up, use every day, clean or maintain, based on the maker's instructions and buyer feedback.
Return and warranty terms
The length of any trial or money-back period, whether a refund is offered after use, the warranty, and how clear the terms are.
Customer satisfaction
A reading of public customer reviews across retailers and the brand's own site, weighted towards recent reviews and towards reviews that describe weeks of use rather than unboxing.
Letter grades
9.5 and above is A+. 9.0 to 9.4 is A. 8.5 to 8.9 is B+. 8.0 to 8.4 is B. 7.5 to 7.9 is C+. 7.0 to 7.4 is C. Below 7.0 we do not usually include the product.
What we do not do
- We do not run a laboratory or test products ourselves. We compare what is published and what buyers report.
- We do not accept payment to change a score or a position in a ranking. Compensation can influence which products we cover.
- We do not make medical claims, and we do not make claims a maker does not make.
- We do not invent user counts, ratings or awards. Scores on this site are ours and are explained here.
